Tornado Watch in Effect Until 10 p.m. Severe Weather to Continue Until Thursday Morning

10/31/2018

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for the region until 10 p.m. today (Oct.31) and additional watches may be needed until early tomorrow morning. The threat of severe rainfall including tornadoes will continue across the region ahead of strong cold front.

Texas is struck annually by more tornadoes than any other state. If one strikes the area, experts offer the following life-saving tips:

The safest places to seek shelter in homes, schools or workplaces are interior rooms, such as bathrooms, closets, rooms without windows, hallways, auditoriums and gyms.

If driving when a tornado strikes, leave the vehicle and lie flat in a ditch or ravine, if possible.

There is a difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning: A watch is an alert to monitor the skies and a warning signals that a tornado has struck the ground and shelter must be sought immediately.

Additionally, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports, to watch for flooding on the roadways when travelling around the area, to stock up on food, water and medicine supplies and to sign up for emergency alerts on www.MissouriCityReady.com and @MissouriCityEM. City staff is monitoring all roadway conditions this evening, if there are areas of concern in your community, please call 281.403.8700.

In the event power outages occur, CenterPoint Energy urges residents to be patient while power is restored and to monitor outages by visiting: http://CenterPointEnergy.com/OutageTracker or download the CenterPoint Energy Outage Tracker app; to add or modify phone and text modifications, visit: http://CenterPointElectric.com/PowerAlertService.
